While Alexandra had coffee with George Patterson, Tom Ryan looked into the case file of the murder of Colleen Rodriguez in the records room at NYPD.

“This is probably against the rules, but I don’t see why it would hurt,” the evening records clerk had said, giving him a copy. “They’ve transferred jurisdiction to New Orleans. Do you know what’s going on with the case there?”

“It’s cold,” he said. “When I left New Orleans, I knew nothing would happen with it until more evidence was presented. I’m going to make it my business to find it.”

“You’re a pretty cocky guy,” the clerk said, grinning. “You think you’d make that much difference?”

“Not really. I didn’t mean it that way. I just want justice for the victim.”

Leafing through the file, he didn’t see any indication that records for Alexandra’s phone had been pulled. “Do you have any files from Detective Dan Ross? Any unfiled reports?”

“Let me check. You might have to take me to lunch tomorrow if I do. I’m sure a search will be flagged, and then I’ll have to answer to the powers that be.”

“I’d be happy to take you to lunch,” Ryan said, looking at her as a woman instead of an it for the first time. “I appreciate the risk you’re taking.”

“I don’t think you do, but that’s okay. You’re taking a huge risk. You know that, right? Enormous.”

“I don’t have a choice,” he said.

She’d spun the counter computer around so he could read the files she’d pulled up. Leafing through the pages, it didn’t appear that Dan Ross had either done a search for phone records or added them to his file if he did. There was no way he could get them now without a subpoena.

“Thanks. Dead end. Are you free for lunch tomorrow?”

“I was just teasing,” she said, holding out her left hand with a ring. “Married with children.”

“Well, okay then. But friends?”

“Friends,” she said, and they did a fist bump.

It was almost eight p.m. Out on the street, he scrolled through his contacts for Angie Cooper’s number and, when he found it, sent her a text.

Case-related question. Do you have a minute for an old friend?

Instead of waiting around for an answer, he took the train up two stops to Crystal’s neighborhood. Hopefully, Beth wouldn’t be there and he could get a couple of hours of sleep before his shift started.

He’d spent the day looking for the homeless man who had befriended Alexandra. The case file had included the information about the homeless woman that Dan Ross had been suspected of murdering. Tomorrow, he’d drive around the gas station neighborhood to look for Fred.

The apartment was dark, only the sound of the TV coming from Beth’s bedroom when he arrived. He quietly let himself inside and tiptoed to the bedroom, getting into bed in the dark. His phone beeped with a text from Angie.

I’m out with Jerrod and his wife, she answered. I’ll call you as soon as I get home.

He lay down on the bed and, with his arm draped over his eyes, fell asleep in seconds.
